Online local support group meeting – London

The next London local support group meeting is scheduled for Saturday 20 March between 11.00am and 1.00pm and will be on the theme ‘technology’. Technology plays a big part in the life of blind or partially sighted person; from cooking, reading, navigation and so much more. New apps and gadgets are being developed and launched all the time and it may be difficult to know exactly what’s out there that could benefit you.

If you have a particular type of technology, app or a theme you would like to hear more about, please do indicate when registering to attend.

The Care Act: what you need to know

Two events, the first on 30th March 1:00pm to 2:30pm, and the second on 31st March 5pm to 6pm

This session will focus on accessing social care during COVID19 from a sight loss perspective. This will be a practical session looking at your legal rights to assistance from the local authority under the Care Act and what can be done if these rights are not being recognised and acted upon.

We will look at the key provisions under the Care Act for getting needs assessments, VI rehabilitation, disability equipment, minor adaptations and longer-term support. We will also cover some of the difficulties people report with accessing this support and the impact that COVID19 and the Coronavirus Act has had on the social care landscape.

Finally, we will provide an overview of the services and self-help resources RNIB has created to help people to challenge their local authority where they are not getting the assistance they are entitled to. This session will also be repeated at 5pm on 31 March.

Hello all,

This week Charles Bonnet Syndrome  (CBS) will make it’s appearance in a character within Coronation Street.  When a well known character recently diagnosed with sight loss will experience hallucinations. 

London Vision has been working with  Esme’s Umbrella  the  national campaign  voice  for people living with CBS for several years and we’ve been hosting a regular  support group  since October last year for people living with CBS.  The group is a safe space for people to share their experiences and learn more about CBS.   The next meeting  is this Thursday February 11^th at 6pm  on zoom  as with all London Vision meetings the meeting will be relaxed and informal. BBC Children in Need “Life in Lockdown” Documentary

 In early Autumn we were asked to be in a BBC Children in Need special documentary called “Life in Lockdown” which showcases children and young people experiencing a variety of challenges, as they cope with the effects of the pandemic. We were one of the 4 families chosen to speak about our experiences, with my son Ethan talking about Stargardt, his challenges and what helped him during lockdown. Upcoming Zoom Session Saturday 21st November 12-2pm UK Time

We are very excited to have Professor Michel Michaelides join us for the first hour of our next Stargardt’s Connected Zoom session. Professor Michaelides is a Consultant Ophthalmologist at Moorfields Eye Hospital, and one of the leading experts on Stargardt. He is also our Charity Medical Advisor.  He will be talking about the latest Stargardt research and then be holding a question and answer session.

The second hour will be an informal session where you will have the opportunity to speak to others affected by Stargardt and share stories and tips.
